Smart Play for Indoor Cats: Enrichment That Actually Works

Smart Play for Indoor Cats: Enrichment That Actually Works

Indoor cats thrive when their environment encourages natural “hunt–stalk–pounce” behaviors. Rotate toys to keep novelty high and schedule two to three short play sessions daily. Wand teasers, kickers filled with catnip or silvervine, and treat mazes turn mealtime into a brain workout. Add vertical spaces—window perches, shelves, or a tall scratching post—to expand territory without taking floor space. Scatter micro-scratching stations near nap spots. For timid cats, start with low-intensity toys and reward curiosity. Finish each session by “letting the prey die” so your cat can “win” and wind down. Consistency reduces boredom, curbs furniture scratching, and supports a healthy weight.
